# How To Calculate Percentages In Excel

The Basic Percentage Formulae

Lets go back to history. The word “Per Cent” is derived from the latin word, per centum which means by the hundred. Do you remember in high school what it means? It meant a fraction of 100 which is calculated by dividing the numerator by the denominator and multiplying it by 100. The formulae goes this way, (Part/Whole)*100

For instance, if there are 50 oranges that belongs to you and you gave 20 to your friend, how much will you get percentage wise? It is a simple calculation which is 20/50*100. Your final answer will be 40%. That is how we are thought to calculate percentages in school without using the computer.

Using excel to calculate percentage will make work much easier as you only have to decide the formulae you use. The basic formulae for calculating percentages in excel goes part/total * percentage. But there is an easy way to go about it instead of multiplying it by 100. Lets look at this example, if you enter the formulae = B2/C2 in lets say cell D2 which will show in the formulae bar. Copy it down as many rows as you can then choose the percent style button found in Home >  formulas > Choose the drop down list under formulae > click on percentage. If Parts of The Total Are In A Multiple Row

For instance if you have the same product listed in the midst of other products, you can find its percentage as well as the total. In this case, you will use the SUMIF function to add up the numbers relating to that specific product. In using the sumif function in this situation, youmust add up all the numbers relating to the product and the divide by the total. The formulae goes this way;

`=SUMIF(range, criteria, sum_range) / total`

Column A contains all the product names whillst column B lists the quantities. Cell E1 lists the name of the product you are interested in whilst the total is in B10. The overall formulae will look like this: =sum(A2:A10,E1 B2:B10, )/\$B\$11

=SUMIF(A2:A1, ORANGES, B2:B10)/\$B\$11.
